Scottish Borders Council is considering an application by a property developer to build a housing estate on the opposite bank of the River Tweed from Abbotsford, to which Historic Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland object.

Abbotsford gave its name to the " Abbotsford Club ", a successor of the Bannatyne and Maitland clubs, founded by William Barclay Turnbull in 1834 in Scott's honour, for printing and publishing historical works connected with his writings.

A neighbouring Roman road with a ford used in olden days by the abbots of Melrose suggested the name of Abbotsford.

Abbotsford is a historic house in the region of the Scottish Borders in the south of Scotland, near Melrose, on the south bank of the River Tweed.

He first built a small villa and named it Abbotsford, creating the name from a ford nearby where previously abbots of Melrose Abbey used to cross the river.

Sir Walter Scott rescued the " jougs " from Threave Castle in Dumfries and Galloway and attached them to the castellated gateway he built at Abbotsford.

The British Columbia Geographical Names Information System ( BCGNIS ) comments that most residents of Vancouver might consider it to be only areas west of Mission and Abbotsford, while residents in the rest of the province consider it to be the whole region south of Whistler and west of Hope.

The Fraser Valley Regional District lies east of the Greater Vancouver Regional District, and comprises the cities of Abbotsford and Chilliwack, the district municipalities of Mission, Kent, and Hope, and the village of Harrison Hot Springs.

In April 2008, the United States Geological Survey released information concerning a newly found fault line south of downtown Abbotsford, called the Boulder Creek Fault.

He returned to Scotland and, in September 1832, died ( under unexplained circumstances ) at Abbotsford, the home he had designed and had built, near Melrose in the Scottish Borders.

Although Scott died at Abbotsford, he was buried in Dryburgh Abbey, where nearby there is a large statue of William Wallace, one of Scotland's many romanticised historical figures.
