The first hockey club, McGill University Hockey Club, was founded in 1877 followed by the Montreal Victorias, organized in 1881.

In Europe, it is believed that in 1885 the Oxford University Ice Hockey Club was formed to play the first Ice Hockey Varsity Match against traditional rival Cambridge in St. Moritz, Switzerland, although this is undocumented.

The city has facilities for field hockey ( the Hockey Club of Pakistan, UBL Hockey Ground ), boxing ( KPT Sports Complex ), squash ( Jahangir Khan Squash Complex ), and polo.

Mid Somerset Hockey Club and Wells City Acorns Hockey Club both play on the Astroturf pitches at the Blue School, where several other sports clubs are based.

Bridgwater Hockey Club were formed in the 1920s but now play their matches at Burnham-on-Sea.

Stirling Wanderers Hockey Club have also moved to a brand new ( international standard ) pitch at Forthbank for season 2008 / 09.

Stanley was first exposed to the game at Montreal's 1889 Winter Carnival, where he saw the Montreal Victorias play the Montreal Hockey Club.

Sweetland and Ross first presented the trophy in 1893 to the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association on behalf of the affiliated Montreal Hockey Club, the champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada ( AHAC ), since they " defeated all comers during the late season, including the champions of the Ontario Association " ( Ottawa ).

On March 17, in the first ever Stanley Cup playoff game, the Montreal Hockey Club ( Montreal HC ) defeated the Montreal Victorias, 3 – 2.

Five days later, in the first Stanley Cup Final game, Montreal HC beat the Ottawa Hockey Club, 3 – 1.

RIT has 24 men's and women's varsity teams including Men's Intercollegiate Baseball, Basketball, Crew, Cross Country, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Track & Field and Wrestling along with Women's Intercollegiate Basketball, Cheerleading, Crew, Cross Country, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Track & Field, and Volleyball.

Some youth club teams include the Northwest Football League ( FWFL ), the Hilliard Baseball Association ( HBA ), the Hilliard Girls Softball Association ( HGSA ), the Hilliard Optimist Basketball League ( HOBL ), Hilliard Girls Field Hockey, the Hilliard Ohio Soccer Association ( HOSA ), and the Hilliard Youth Lacrosse Association ( HYLA ).

Saint John's University sportsmen compete in men's intercollegiate Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Wrestling, Football, Golf, Soccer, Ice Hockey, Swimming and Diving, Tennis, and Track and Field.

College of Saint Benedict sportswomen compete in Women's Intercollegiate Basketball, Golf, Cross Country, Volleyball, Ice Hockey, Softball, Swimming and Diving, Tennis, and Track and Field.
