Joyce Kilmer ( Born: Alfred Joyce Kilmer, 6 December 1886 – 30 July 1918 ) was an American writer and poet mainly remembered for a short poem titled " Trees " ( 1913 ), which was published in the collection Trees and Other Poems in 1914.
In 1905, the Sydney book collector Alfred Lee discovered the 1802 English book " Original Poems and Translations ... chiefly by Susanna Watts ," which collected poems by Watts and others.
He later returned to writing however, enthused by the success of Alfred Lord Tennyson ; and in 1844 he published a small volume of Poems, which was original but uneven.
In April 1833 he savagely criticised Poems, published the previous December by Alfred Tennyson – an attack which, coupled with the death of his friend Arthur Hallam, discouraged the aspiring poet from seeking to publish anything more for nine years.
Merrill's first commercially published volume was First Poems, issued in 990 numbered copies by Alfred A. Knopf in 1951.
In August, Hallam wrote an enthusiastic article ' On Some of the Characteristics of Modern Poetry, and on the Lyrical Poems of Alfred Tennyson ' for the Englishman ’ s Magazine.
