Alfred Habdank Skarbek Korzybski () ( July 3, 1879 – March 1, 1950 ) was a Polish-American philosopher and scientist.

Van Vogt was always interested in the idea of all-encompassing systems of knowledge ( akin to modern meta-systems ) -- the characters in his very first story used a system called ' Nexialism ' to analyze the alien's behaviour, and he became interested in the General Semantics of Alfred Korzybski.

A popular legend, originating from 12th century chronicles, tells how when he first fled to the Somerset Levels, Alfred was given shelter by a peasant woman who, unaware of his identity, left him to watch some cakes she had left cooking on the fire.

In the seventh week after Easter May 878, around Whitsuntide, Alfred rode to ‘ Egbert's Stone ’ east of Selwood, where he was met by " all the people of Somerset and of Wiltshire and of that part of Hampshire which is on this side of the sea is, west of Southampton Water, and they rejoiced to see him ".
