For the most part it is located in the Mongolian Altay, at the transition point to the Russian Altay.

Gorno-Altaysk (; Altay: Туулу Алтай, Tuulu Altay ) is the capital town of the Altai Republic, Russia, situated east of Moscow.

The Tuva and the Altay people are culturally close to Mongols, but speak Turkic languages.

The speakers are located in Russia, in central Siberia, north of the Altay Mountains, in the basin of the Chulym River, a tributary of the Ob River.

Of particular interest are the sketches of the Mongols and the people of Samarkand and its vicinity, the account of the land and products of Samarkand in the Ili Valley at or near Almalig-Kulja, and the description of various great mountain ranges, peaks and defiles, such as the Chinese Altay, the Tian Shan, Bogdo Uula, and the Iron Gates of Termit.

There are a handful of ice fields in the Himalayas and Altay Mountains ( the border range between the Central Asian Republics and China ).

Those residing in Altai Republic are sometimes grouped together with the Altay ethnic group and those in Kemerovo Oblast are grouped with the Shors ; however, they are recognized as a separate ethnic group by ethnographers.

Their culture and origins are similar to those of the northern Altay people and some of the ethnic groups of the Khakas.

Versions of the Altay system are still in use today as a trunking system in some parts of Russia.
