In August 2006 it was announced that Amtrak wants the State of Vermont to experiment with DMUs on the state-subsidized Vermonter line from New Haven north to St. Albans to replace the less efficient diesel locomotive trainsets currently used.

From early 1993 through August 2005 Crestview was served by the tri-weekly Amtrak Sunset Limited, but service east of New Orleans to Jacksonville and Orlando was suspended due to damage to the rail line of CSX during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Amtrak has since dropped these two limited-stop trains .< ref name =" Amtrak Northeast Corridor 1 train schedule effective August 4, 2008 ">

On August 21, 2005, the train was " relaunched " by Amtrak with upgraded service.

Because of damage to the states of Mississippi and Louisiana due to Hurricane Katrina, Amtrak was forced in late August 2005 to cancel service south of Memphis, Tennessee.

During the months of June, July and August, the Southwest Chief is used by thousands of Boy Scouts traveling to and from Philmont Scout Ranch via the Raton Amtrak Station.

In August 2007, a problem involving a crack in a suspension arm assembly between two cars of a Talgo trainset resulted in Amtrak and Washington DOT temporarily pulling all the sets from service.

In August Amtrak extended the Palmetto indefinitely, citing better-than-expected ridership.

During the August – November 2010 disruptions Amtrak's Wolverine provided service to the Amtrak Michigan City station.

:* – Amtrak announces that due to Hurricane Katrina, the southbound City of New Orleans passenger trains from Chicago, Illinois, on August 29 and 30 will terminate in Memphis, Tennessee, rather than their usual destination of New Orleans, Louisiana ; the corresponding northbound trains will also originate in Memphis.

After the assumption of intercity rail passenger services by Amtrak in 1971, it has been bypassed by all Amtrak, except for the period from April 30, 1978 to October 29, 1983 when the Chesapeake stopped once daily in each direction between Philadelphia and Washington.

It carries the Amtrak train numbers 29 and 30, which were previously assigned to the discontinued National Limited.

Although Amtrak had retained Chicago – Milwaukee service during the transition, it did not name these trains until October 29, 1972.

Fostoria was served by the Three Rivers Amtrak Service which ran between Chicago and New York City until train service there ended in March 2005 which was on CSX's B & O line.

An Amtrak railway station opened at the airport in 2005 ; the station is served by Amtrak's Hiawatha Service line running between Chicago and Milwaukee several times daily.

On October 31, 2005, NJT took over Clocker ( NY-Philadelphia ) service from Amtrak.

Beginning with the schedule effective April 25, 2005, Amtrak abolished the previously common unreserved trains.

Expanded Metroliner service was initiated by Amtrak when problems developed with Acela Express trainset braking systems during 2002 and 2005.

On March 8, 2005 Amtrak cut the train back to Pittsburgh — New York and restored the Pennsylvanian name to the route.

Service was first restored as far south as Hammond, Louisiana, and on October 8, 2005, Amtrak resumed service to New Orleans.

The FRA notices say that the need for the new rules was shown by the derailment of an Amtrak train near Home Valley, Washington on April 3, 2005, which according to the U. S. National Transportation Safety Board was caused in part by excessive concrete tie abrasion.

Amtrak restored service to New Orleans on October 9, 2005 with the northbound Crescent < nowiki >'</ nowiki > s 7: 05 departure ; the first southbound arrival occurred later in the day.

C. service, but it uses the rail line west of Pittsburgh, with commuters wishing to travel to New York being required to switch to a Pennsylvanian train in Pittsburgh ).

Between March 7 and June 27, 2005, Amtrak worked on the number 4 track between Lancaster and Parkesburg, and from June 27 to September 2, 2005, they worked on number 1 track.
