Founded in 1970, the company took its name from an old mining town in northern Nova Scotia, near where founding members JoAnne Akalaitis, Lee Breuer, Philip Glass, Ruth Maleczech, and David Warrilow, developed The Red Horse Animation, the group's first original performance piece.

Founded by veteran animator and director Phil Roman in early 1984, it is best known for producing the source animation for The Simpsons, King of the Hill for 20th Century Fox Animation, as well as the Garfield and Peanuts animated TV specials.

The film was featured at the 2004 Annecy International Animation Festival, and was also recognised with several awards in Korea.

The Ottawa International Animation Festival opened a machinima category in 2004, but, citing the need for " a certain level of excellence ", declined to award anything to the category's four entries that year.
