Niels Henrik Abel was born in Nedstrand, Norway, as second child to Søren Georg Abel and Anne Marie Simonsen.

In 1815 Bonapartist Marshal Guillaume Marie Anne Brune was assassinated in the town by adherents of the royalist party during the White Terror.

His brother Jean Bernadotte ( Pau, 1754 – Pau, 8 August 1813 ) was eventually made 1st Baron Bernadotte and married Marie Anne Charlotte de Saint-Paul.

He was married to Mary Anne Dalton from 1961 until 1978.
