Arpad Elo was a master-level chess player and an active participant in the United States Chess Federation ( USCF ) from its founding in 1939.

Based upon his results during the period 1932 – 37, Professor Arpad Elo gave Koltanowski a rating of 2450 in The Rating of Chess Players.

He makes references to Israel, Urartu, ( also called Armenia ), Edom, Damascus, Media, Babylon, Arpad, Umlias, the plains of Central Asia, and the Greeks ; the family name refers to their descent from Atreus.

The Arameans conquered, during the 11th and the 10th centuries, Sam ’ al ( Zenjirli ), also known as Yaudi, the region from Arpad to Aleppo which they renamed Bît-Agushi, and Til Barsip, which became the chief town of Bît-Adini, also known as Beth Eden.

Thus Joseph August's main heir was his eldest grandson Archduke Joseph Arpad of Austria ( born 1933 ), the eldest son of Joseph Francis and his wife Princess Anna of Saxony.

He was born in Brignoles, Provence, ( or in Italy, at Nocera, where he spent a part of his early life ), the second son of Charles of Anjou " the Lame " and Maria Arpad of Hungary, daughter of the King Stephen V of Hungary.

His result in the strong 2003 Corus tournament at Wijk aan Zee was not as good – despite having the third highest Elo rating, he finished only joint eleventh out of fourteen players with 6 / 13, and at Linares the same year he finished only fifth out of seven with 5½ / 12.

His performance at the September – October 2009 Nanjing Pearl Spring tournament has been described as one of the greatest in history and lifted him to an Elo rating of 2801, making him the fifth player to achieve a rating over 2800 – and aged 18 years 10 months at the time, by far the youngest to do so.

The ' Rising Stars ' won the match 22 – 28, with Carlsen achieving the best individual score for the youngsters, 6½ / 10 and a 2700 Elo performance, thus winning the right to participate in the 2007 Melody Amber tournament.

In July – August 2007, he won the International Chess Festival Biel Grandmaster Tournament 2007, with a + 2 record ( an Elo performance of 2753 ).

In the first tournament, in Baku, Azerbaijan, in April – May 2008, he finished in a three-way tie for first place, with another 2800 Elo performance.

Hopes were high going into qualification for Euro 2004 after the promising last campaign and friendly wins over the likes of Norway, Belgium and Portugal ( which seen the Finns jump from 40th – 30th in the Elo ranking ).

Ivanchuk has been a leading player in the world since 1988, ranking as high as No. 2 on the official FIDE Elo rating list ( July 1991, July 1992, October 2007 ) and No. 1 briefly on the unofficial live rating updates from September 10 – 12, 2008.

In his super-tournament debut in Sofia, Bulgaria at the Grand Slam M-Tel Masters ( Category 20 ) tournament on May 7 – 18, 2008, he came fifth out of six players ( Levon Aronian, Ivan Cheparinov, Vassily Ivanchuk, Teimour Radjabov, Veselin Topalov ) having scored 3. 0 / 10 (+ 1, = 4 ,-5 ; Elo performance 2594 ).
