Ars Magica is a role-playing game set in a quasi-historical version of Europe around AD 1200 with added fantastical elements, called Mythic Europe.

Ars Magica 5th edition won the Origins Award for Best Role Playing Game of 2004.

Many characteristics of the later Storyteller system developed by White Wolf can be traced to Ars Magica and the fact that the Storyteller system was developed by one of Ars Magica < nowiki >'</ nowiki > s co-authors ; White Wolf's Mage: The Ascension was envisioned as " Ars Magica in the Modern World ," and many of the changes in Ars Magicas 3rd edition were introduced in order to make the game-worlds more compatible.

However, in Ars Magica the " Medieval paradigm "-the collection of folk beliefs and superstitions-is correct ; this means that the beliefs and superstitions of the medieval period are existent reality: lost children are really abducted by Faeries, sickness and crop failure are caused by Demons, Angels help the righteous, and dragons and other mythical creatures exist.

Many fans of the game consider this to be paradoxical and inconsistent, since applying reason and rationality to the world of Ars Magica should really lead to the conclusion that magic exists and fairies are real, and yet the " True Reason " promoted by the realm of Reason claimed the opposite, and thus resembled a delusional state of mind rather than a rational one.

The realm of Reason had additional counter-intuitive effects-for example, imposing penalties on wizard's magic use in libraries, despite the consistent portrayal of wizardry in Ars Magica as a scholarly pursuit.

Reason proved a highly controversial addition to the game, and was presumed to be part of an attempt by White Wolf to " retcon " Ars Magica as part of the backstory for their World of Darkness role-playing games ; neither the 4th nor the 5th edition of the games has included the " Realm of Reason ," and all references to it have been stricken from the canonical setting.

Later Dark Ages sourcebooks for the World of Darkness lend some credence to this presumption ( insofar as they show that White Wolf liked the idea ), as does the fact that Mark Rein Hagen ( one of the core figures at White Wolf, co-creator of the World of Darkness ) was one of the founders at Lion Rampant, and a co-creator of Ars Magica.

A Magus is further limited in terms of the spell's application: Ars Magica features a set of magical ' laws ', similar in concept to those of physics, defining the upper limits of any magical spell ( Creo Corpus, for example, cannot create ' true ' life, nor can it restore the dead ; magic, in general, cannot affect the flow of time, nor can it affect the ' lunar sphere or anything above it ' ( i. e. the realms of the Divine, according to medieval thought )).

Although participating in stories awards you Story Experience, the real progress and advancement in the Ars Magica system is from these seasonal activities.

The danse macabre combines both desires: in many ways similar to the mediaeval mystery plays, the dance-with-death allegory was originally a didactic dialogue poem to remind people of the inevitability of death and to advise them strongly to be prepared at all times for death ( see memento mori and Ars moriendi ).

Winfrid taught in the abbey school and at the age of 30 became a priest ; in this time, he wrote a Latin grammar, the Ars Grammatica, besides a treatise on verse and some Aldhelm-inspired riddles.

The label's efforts met critical acclaim among the specialised press, and were awarded a distinction at the Ars Electronica 1999.

It was his last completed work, also presented in October 1989 at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria.

He wrote also De Geometria speculativa ( printed at Paris, 1530 ); De Arithmetica practica ( printed at Paris, 1502 ); De proportionibus velocitatum in motibus ( 1328 ) ( printed at Paris, 1495 ; Venice, 1505 ); De Quadratura Circuli ( Paris, 1495 ); and an Ars Memorative, Sloane manuscripts.

The Ars Electronica Center ( AEC ) is a center for electronic arts run by Ars Electronica situated in Linz, Austria, at the northern side of the Danube opposite the city hall of Linz.

His music has been released on several CDs, he participated at numerous festivals ( e. g. Ars Electronica Linz, Elektra Montreal, Stuttgarter Filmwinter, ZAC 99 Paris, Cybersonica London ).

In a " traditional " role-playing game, one person typically acts as the gamemaster ( known as Story Guide or SG in Ars Magica ), and largely controls what happens in the game-world, what non-player characters do, and how the world at large reacts to the actions of player characters.

Atlas Games would later acquire Ars Magica and remove these alterations, and the connection between Ars Magica and the Classic World of Darkness is no longer considered canonical.

Wizards also expanded its role-playing game line by buying SLA Industries from Nightfall Games and Ars Magica from White Wolf, Inc. in 1994.

Although Magica has various transformation spells at her disposal, she is unable to turn Poe back into an anthropomorphic duck.

In " The Duck Knight Returns ", he discovered Darkwing's secret identity and attacked him at home-an event that caused the superhero to retire for a year-and later teamed up with Magica De Spell to ruin Darkwing's reputation with brainwashed, alternate reality versions of the hero.

There is therefore a continuum between the ( mostly theoretical ) Millington model of spreading responsibility out to multiple people at the same time and the Ars Magica model of having one SG at a time.
