Another large-scale development opened on 1 November 2007, Athlone Town Centre comprises two internal streets, with 54 shops and a hotel, and is the largest shopping and leisure centre in Ireland, outside Dublin.

In the 1981-82 season Athlone Town won the League Cup for the second time beating Shamrock Rovers.

Athlone Town were again crowned league champions in the 1982-83 season and qualifying for Europe and also retained the League Cup beating Dundalk.

As a result the current two division ( Premier and First ) structure was adapted with Athlone Town in Premier Division.

Athlone Town again gained promotion to the Premier Division in the 1993-94 season, finishing runners-up to Sligo Rovers that season.

Cobh won promotion to the Premier Division in 1988, after finishing First Division runners-up to Athlone Town.

On the 10th of November 2007 Cobh Ramblers beat Athlone Town 1-0 in Lissywoollen in what was a tense and nervous display.

The next three seasons saw the club finish in the play-off position twice, although they were beaten both times ; once by Cobh Ramblers and once by Athlone Town.
