Atlas is an inner satellite of Saturn.

It was used in the very first rocket applications like the V2 missile ( under the name A-Stoff and Sauerstoff ) and Redstone, R-7 Semyorka, Atlas boosters, and the ascent stages of the Apollo Saturn rockets.

The sound of the launch was a disappointment for some witnesses, being described as like an Atlas rocket launch, when observers stood 1. 5 miles ( 2. 4 km ) away instead of three miles ( 5 km ) for a Saturn launch.

Some were those used in the Navaho cruise missile, the Redstone rocket, the Thor and Jupiter ballistic missiles, early versions of the Delta and Atlas rockets, the Saturn rocket family and the Space Shuttle Main Engine.

Because Atlas and Pan orbit within the rings of Saturn, a likely explanation for their ridges is that they sweep up ring particles as they orbit, which build up around their equators.
