At the end of the war, the company's executives fled and relocated the company in Ingolstadt, Bavaria — where it evolved into the modern day Audi company of today.

Other methods utilise an ' Automatic Torque Biasing ' ( ATB ) centre differential, such as a Torsen — which is what Audi use in their quattro cars ( with longitudinal engines ).

The aerodynamic features of the Sierra were developed from those first seen in the Escort Mark III — the " Aeroback " bootlid stump was proved to reduce the drag coefficient of the bodyshell significantly, which was a class leading Cd0. 34 at its launch, though not as good as the Cd0. 22 of the visually similar Ford Probe III concept car of the previous year, and also behind the contemporary third generation Audi 100 that was unveiled the same year-the first production car to get below the Cd0. 30 barrier with an impressive figure of Cd0. 28.

The W8 was used in the B5. 5 Volkswagen Passat and the W12 is used in the Volkswagen Phaeton, the Volkswagen Touareg, the Audi A8, and the Bentley Continental GT — though in the latter application, the engine has been highly modified by Bentley, and fitted with twin turbochargers.

The Passat originally used the four-cylinder OHC 1. 3 l () and 1. 5 l (/) petrol engines also used in the Audi 80 — longitudinally mounted with front-wheel drive, in Audi tradition, with either a four-speed manual transmission or three-speed automatic.

In certain markets a five-door " Avant " ( Audi's name for an estate / wagon ) variant was offered — effectively a rebadged Volkswagen Passat with Audi front panels.

In Europe, the 80 was the standard model, while after a 1984 facelift the Audi 90 was launched as a larger-engined version of the 80 ; with more options, and, aside from the, four-cylinder 1. 6l turbodiesel ( TD ) engine which was also available for the 80, two five-cylinder in-line petrol engines — a 2. 0 with and a 2. 2 with which was later modified into a 2. 3.

Succeeding the Audi V8, and now in its third generation, the A8 has been offered with both front-or permanent all-wheel drive — and in short-and long-wheelbase variants.

At the time of launch in 2003-it became the world's first dual clutch transmission in a series production car, in the German-market Volkswagen Golf Mk4 R32 and shortly afterwards, worldwide in the original Audi TT 3. 2 ; and for the first few years of production, this original DSG transmission was only available in transversely orientated front-engine, front-wheel-drive — or Haldex Traction-based four-wheel-drive vehicle layouts.

Another notable change over the original transverse DSGs is the lubrication system — Audi now utilise two totally separate oil circuits.

The " RS " initials are taken from the — literally translated as " racing sport ", and is the Audi marque's highest trim level, positioned above the " S " model specification of Audi's regular model line-up.

Audi has yet to produce a hardtop convertible as of 2011, since they include quattro as standard equipment in their convertibles ( after the discontinuation of the 2007 Audi A4 2. 0T cabriolet ) which already adds extra weight.

For Audi in their Audi S8 5. 2 FSI quattro, the V10 was a compromise between a V12 which would be too long and suffer more internal friction due to extra cylinders and values, and a V8 which would be more compact but have larger heavier pistons and produce lower revs.

The first production petrol straight-five was the 2. 1 R5 introduced by Volkswagen Group in the Audi 100 towards the end of the 1970s, developments of which powered the Audi Quattro rally racer.

The new Ford Focus RS performance car uses the same Volvo 5-cylinder engine, developed ( by Ford ) to very similar power levels, and is one of the most powerful FWD production cars ever created. Another example of a high power 5 cylinder car is the Audi RS2, with its 2. 2 turbocharged engine making 311 hp.

Toivonen's rear-wheel drive Group 2 Sunbeam Lotus was now less competitive against the Group 4 cars and the all-wheel-drive Audi Quattro, but despite four retirements, the second places at Rally Portugal and Sanremo, as well as a fifth place at the Monte Carlo Rally, resulted in a seventh place overall in the drivers ' world championship.

Compared to the Audi A8L 4. 2 FSI quattro, the Phaeton is 545 pounds heavier but is still competitive with the lighter A8 in most driving tests, due to the Phaeton's increased engine power ( 335 hp versus 330 ) and a shorter axle ratio ( 3. 65: 1 versus 3. 32 ).

The inline-5 engine in the 2. 5 TL competed with similar 5-cylinder engines offered in Audi and Volvo models.

Unlike its predecessor, however, top-of the line versions received five-cylinder Audi or VW engines of 1. 9 – 2. 2 litres.

Its PL45 platform was shared with the first-generation " Typ 8D " Audi A4, which was unveiled 2 years earlier, and saw a return to the Passat sharing its platform with Audi's equivalent model for the first time since the second-generation ( B2 ) Passat, which shared its platform with the second-generation " Typ 81 " Audi 80 / Audi 90 ( the A4 is the successor to the Audi 80 line ).

August Horch ( 12 October 1868 – 3 February 1951 ) was a German engineer and automobile pioneer, the founder of the manufacturing giant which would eventually become Audi.

Consequently, Horch named his new company Audi Automobilwerke GmbH in 1910, Audi being the Latinization of Horch.

Horch left Audi in 1920 and went to Berlin and took various jobs.

He also served on the board of Auto Union, the successor to Audi Automobilwerke GmbH.

He was an honorary citizen of Zwickau and had a street named for his Audi cars in both Zwickau and his birthplace Winningen.

In 1932, DKW merged with Audi, Horch and Wanderer, to form the Auto Union.

During this transition, production was also moved from Düsseldorf to Ingolstadt where the successor company Audi still has its production.

This model was the direct forerunner of the first post-war Audi, the F103.

The main difference was that the Audi used a conventional four-stroke engine.
