Like three other cantatas, the early Widerstehe doch der Sünde, BWV 54 ( 1714 ), and the 1726 works Geist und Seele wird verwirret, BWV 35 and Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust, BWV 170, Bach wrote Gott soll allein mein Herze haben for a single alto soloist, but unlike those works a choir sings the chorale.
The same author had written the text for Widerstehe doch der Sünde, BWV 54, composed the month before.
One of the few occasions he conducted was while playing the harpsipiano: he directed Bach's Brandenburg concerto no. 5 from the instrument and realized the continuo part of Bach's cantata Widerstehe doch der Sünde, BWV 54, in a 1960s television recording ( now to be seen in The Glenn Gould Collection ).
