Basava () ( also known as Bhakti Bhandari Basavanna () or Basaveshwara (), ( 1134 – 1196 )) was a philosopher, Statesman and a social reformer from present-day Karnataka, India.

Basava spread social awareness through his poetry known as Vachanaas.

But this theory, however, fails to explain why other well known religious leaders like Shankaracharya and Madhwacharya, who were very well acquainted with Vedic knowledge did not address the issues, that Basava did in later part of the history in 12th century.

Basava, like Gautama Buddha, did not preach people the intricate aspects of spirituality ; but, he taught people how to live happily in a rational social order later came to be known as Sharana movement.

The Society differentiated people based on birth while Basava offered equal status to all.

Basava fought against the inhuman practice of caste system, which discriminated people based on their birth, and certain rituals in Hinduism.

Basava, said to have grown up in an orthodox Hindu religious household and rejected many practices in Vedic society based on some of the religious Scriptures called Agamas, Shastras, and Puranas in Sanskrit language.

It is said that Basava, rebelled against the rigid practices of the caste system prevalent in mainstream Hindu society, and eventually began new philosophy of Lingayatism with a casteless society at its core.

While Basava understood shatsthala as a process with various stages to be attained in succession, Channabasavanna, Basava's nephew, differed radically from his uncle and held that a soul can reach its salvation in any stage.

Described by BBC as India's leading guru buster, Basava Premanand has " been honoured by the government with its highest award for the promotion of scientific values among the public.

Basava created much controversy by actively ignoring the societal rules associated with the caste system, which he wished to abolish.

By allowing untouchables to have lunch at his residence and praising the historic marriage of a Brahmin woman and an untouchable man, Basava caused orthodox members of King Bijjala's court to go to the king with such stories, some true and some false.

Before punishing the couple, Bijjala asked Basava to agree with the caste system ; but Basava strongly opposed the caste system and said both Haralayya and Madhuvaras were Lingayats and the rules of the caste system were not applicable to them.

Nag Panchami, Gudi Padava, Teez ( New year celebrations according to the Hindu calendar ), All Mondays of Shravan month, ( DOLA of Kashivishwnath on last Monday, bhang is served as prasad of Shiva ), Mahashivratri, Samoti Amavas, and all other Indian festivals.

Nag Panchami is also celebrated in many parts of India on the fifth day after Amavasya of Shraavana month.

Many legends are narrated such as: Guru Padmasambahava preached to sixty-four yoginis here ; it is the residing place of the Goddess Tara Jetsun Dolma and the Khecheopalri Lake is her footprint ; the lake represents the Goddess Chho Pema ; footprints of Macha Zemu Rinpoche are on a stone near the chorten ( stupa ) near the lake ; Hindu god Lord Shiva meditated in Dupukney Cave that is situated above the lake and hence worshipped on " Nag Panchami " day at the lake ; a Lepcha girl named Nenjo Asha Lham was blessed by the lake goddess and was gifted with a precious gem which was lost, and it is the belief of the local people that the gem is hidden in the lake ; the lake water has curative properties and hence permitted to be used only for performing rites and rituals ; and with all these legends, the lake is called a " wish fulfilling lake ".

* Shrutha panchami or Gyan Panchami is on the fifth day of the fortnight of the waxing moon of Kartik ( the fifth day after Diwali ).

Prior to the Nag Hammadi library discovery, the sayings of Jesus found in Oxyrhynchus were known simply as Logia Iesu.

As a result, what came to be known as the Nag Hammadi library ( owing to the proximity of the find to Nag Hammadi, the nearest major settlement ) appeared only gradually, and its significance went unacknowledged until some time after its initial uncovering.

Scriptures were collected from the Old and New Testament ; the Pistis Sophia and other scriptures known before the Nag Hammadi find ; the Nag Hammadi scriptures of the Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Truth, and Gospel of Phillip ; Cathar, Hermetic, Manichean, and Mandaean sources ; and the Chaldean Oracles.

Little more was known of this text until 1945, when a cache of thirteen papyrus codices ( bound books ) that had been hidden away in the 4th century, was fortuitously discovered at Nag Hammadi in Egypt ( CG II ).

The codex has four parts: the Letter of Peter to Philip, already known from the Nag Hammadi Library ; the First Apocalypse of James, also known from the Nag Hammadi Library ; the first few pages of a work related to, but not the same as, the Nag Hammadi work Allogenes ; and the Gospel of Judas.

The Book of Thomas the Contender, also known more simply as the Book of Thomas ( not to be confused with the Gospel of Thomas ), is one of the books of the New Testament apocrypha represented in the Nag Hammadi library ( CG II ), a cache of Gnostic gospels secreted in the Egyptian desert.

" While previously known from other versions, a partial Coptic translation appears in one of the books of the New Testament apocrypha recovered in the Nag Hammadi library.

Shankar Nagarkatte ( Kannada: ಶ ಂ ಕರ ್ ನ ಾ ಗ ್) ( 9 November 1954-30 September 1990 ) popularly known as Shankar Nag was a popular actor and director of Kannada cinema.
