The Sikh Regiment is one of the most highly decorated and is believed to be the most courageous, powerful and skilled regiment of the Indian Army, with 73 Battle Honours, 14 Victoria Crosses, 21 first class Indian Order of Merit ( equivalent to the Victoria Cross ), 15 Theatre Honours and 5 COAS Unit Citations besides 2 Param Vir Chakras, 14 Maha Vir Chakras, 5 Kirti Chakras, 67 Vir Chakras and 1596 other gallantry awards.

Battle Honours

Having fought in nearly every theatre of the war the Regiment's service was recognised by the award of 197 Battle Honours, many of which were to separate battalions in the same theatre of action, 10 of which are emblazoned on the King's Colour.

The ' Dukes ' fought in North Africa, fighting with distinction in a number of actions and gaining several Battle Honours, as part of the 3rd Brigade.

The Regiment's Battle Honours include: Blenheim ( August 1704-War of the Spanish Succession ), Assaye ( September 1803-Mahratta War ), The Storming of Badajos ( April 1812-Peninsular War ), Vitoria ( June 1813-Peninsular War ), Waterloo ( July 1815 ), Inkerman ( November 1854-Crimean War ) and Gheluvelt ( October 1914-World War 1-France ).

The Guidon, which is awarded by The Queen, is a flag of crimson silk damask embroidered and fringed with gold with the Regimental Battle Honours emblazoned upon it and the Regimental emblem embroidered in the centre.

Battle Honours

The Queen's Lancashire Regiment carried 204 Battle Honours.

The regiment traces its roots back to 1685 and during the past 320 years has been awarded 172 Battle Honours and 8 Victoria Crosses.

The Drums are always carried at the head of the Regiment on ceremonial parades and are, uniquely amongst cavalry regiments, never covered by drum banners, the Battle Honours being engraved directly onto the sides of the drums.

For its part in the campaign the 3rd Gurkhas gained seven Battle Honours and the Theatre Honour " Palestine 1917 – 18 " after such honours were granted to units in the 1920s.

At its peak The West Yorkshire Regiment numbered 37 battalions, 66 Battle Honours were bestowed and four Victoria Crosses were awarded.

In addition to the Battle Honours listed above ( which are emblazoned on the Squadron Standard ), the Squadron has been granted the following battle honours: Cambrai 1917, Somme 1918, Lys, Amiens, France and Low Countries 1940, Invasion Ports 1940, Biscay Ports 1940-1941.

The Battle Honours of the above three Territorial Force artillery units are for South Africa, World War I and World War II.

The Regiment gained 80 Battle Honours.

The courage displayed by Samwise Gamgee on his journey with Frodo, his subjection to dangers and the preparedness to die out of loyalty for Frodo is the kind of spirit that was praised by Tolkien in a number of essays on the Old English poem " The Battle of Maldon ".

The decline of the combat column of pikemen was starkly displayed at the terrible Battle of Bicocca in 1522, for instance, where arquebusiers contributed to the heavy defeat of a force of Swiss pikemen.

Wilkes County has strong musical roots, and those roots are displayed at the annual Battle of the Bands.

Other examples of technological continuity are displayed at the Battle of Coruscant, in which ARC-170 starfighters were designed with S-foils, much like X-wings of the original films.

Chanzy displayed conspicuous moral courage and constancy, not less than technical skill, in the fighting from the Battle of Beaugency ( 1870 ) to the Loire.

At the Battle of Assaye, and throughout the campaign, he displayed rare courage and knowledge of tactics such that Wellesley told him he ought to have been a soldier.

At the Alte Veste he displayed great courage, and at the Battle of Lützen ( 1632 ), when Gustavus was killed, Bernard assumed the command, killed a colonel who refused to lead his men to the charge, and finally by his furious energy won the victory at sundown.

The large Norman-Romanesque and Gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Bayeux, consecrated in 1077, was arguably the original home of the tapestry where William's half-brother Odo of Bayeux ( represented on the tapestry with a wooden club at the Battle of Hastings ), would have had it displayed.

His skillful and resolute leadership was displayed in three battles on three successive days, the Battle of Nachod, Skalitz and Schweinschädel, and opened the way through the mountains in spite of Bonin's defeat at Trautenau.

During the Battle of Amiens he was 26 years old, and a private in the 42nd ( Royal Highlanders of Canada ) Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force when, on 12 August 1918 at Parvillers, France, he displayed conspicuous bravery when, five times in succession, he rushed forward alone against entrenched enemy troops and put hostile guns out of action.

They also displayed a playset featuring a Minimates version of what is to become their new Battle Beasts line.

As late as the nineties, some buildings still displayed bullet holes from the intense house to house fighting during the Battle of Berlin.

D Company 6 RAR also received the Distinguished Unit Citation, this time in Vietnam at the Battle of Long Tan ; although the respective battle honours are borne by the whole regiment, the three citations awarded by the United States are held solely by the battalions that received them, and are displayed as streamers on the respective regimental colours of those battalions.

Four complete Grand Slam bombs are preserved and displayed in the United Kingdom at the RAF Museum, London, Brooklands Museum, RAF Lossiemouth and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitors ' Centre at RAF Coningsby.
