Genre-defining titles attributed to Konami include the vampire-hunting side scroller Castlevania series, the survival horror Silent Hill series, the action / shooter Contra series, the platform / adventure Ganbare Goemon series, the espionage action Metal Gear series, the console role-playing Suikoden series, the music-oriented Bemani series ( which includes Dance Dance Revolution, Beatmania, GuitarFreaks, DrumMania, and Pop ' n Music, among others ) and the dating simulation Tokimeki Memorial series.

The game uses the engine from the console version of Beatmania IIDX 9th Style, and was originally demonstrated with its original cyan and white UI, but the final release uses a reskinned version of it recolored purple.

The Bemani line of music games from Konami is named after the series, and was first adopted in the arcade release of Beatmania 3rdMix and kept ever since.

Each release added songs from the Beatmania games their titles refer to, including most previous arcade releases.

The home release of Beatmania IIDX 10th Style contained a special, limited edition magnetic card for the arcade version of Beatmania IIDX 12: Happy Sky. These limited edition e-AMUSEMENT magnetic cards would sometimes offer new features for the players who used them, such as unlocking secret songs.

The BMS file format was originally used for Beatmania simulators, but because of its simplicity, it has been adopted and supported by many free rhythm action games including StepMania.

There are several extensions to BMS, notably BME format ( for 7-button Beatmania IIDX-like games ), PMS format ( for Pop ' n Music-like games ), and a ' long note ' extension.
