A clerihew is a whimsical, four-line biographical poem invented by Edmund Clerihew Bentley.

The form was invented by and is named after Edmund Clerihew Bentley.

Clerihew published three volumes of his own clerihews: Biography for Beginners ( 1905 ), published as " edited by E. Clerihew "; More Biography ( 1929 ); and Baseless Biography ( 1939 ), a compilation of clerihews originally published in Punch illustrated by the author's son Nicolas Bentley.

Ten days later, on 17 October 1854, at the Eureka Hotel between 1, 000 and 10, 000 miners gathered to protest that James Bentley, the hotel proprietor and prime suspect in Scobie's murder, had been acquitted by a corrupt magistrate.

The miners rioted and Bentley and his wife Catherine fled for their lives as the hotel was burnt down by the angry mob.

* November 14 – Herman Melville's novel Moby-Dick ; or The Whale is published in the U. S. by Harper & Brothers, New York, after being first published on October 18 in London by Richard Bentley, in 3 volumes as The Whale.

In December 1970, at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science ( AAAS ), its retiring president, geneticist H. Bentley Glass, cheered by the legalization of abortion in New York, envisioned a future where pregnant women would be required by the government to abort XYY " sex deviants ".
