Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh, one of the most prominent songwriting teams of the era, and Harold Arlen provided the songs for the revues, one of which, " Blackbirds of 1928 ", starring Adelaide Hall featured the songs " I Can't Give You Anything But Love " and " Diga Diga Doo ", produced by Lew Leslie on Broadway.

After a period leading his own band and touring England with Lew Leslie's hit show, Blackbirds of 1928, he returned to the Webb band, taking it over after Webb died.

Her career as a professional songwriter took off in 1928, when Jimmy McHugh, who had seen some of her early work, invited her to provide some lyrics for him for Blackbirds of 1928.

In 1928, he starred with Adelaide Hall on Broadway in the hugely successful musical revue Blackbirds of 1928 written by Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh, in which Robinson performed his famous stair dance.

Toward the end of the vaudeville era, a white impresario, Lew Leslie, produced Blackbirds of 1928, a black revue for white audiences featuring Robinson and other black stars.

In 1938, Decca began releasing record sleeves with cover artwork ; other innovations such as liner notes and Broadway cast albums followed ( although Jack Kapp pioneered this practice in 1933 by recording the entire " Blackbirds of 1928 " and " Showboat " scores and issuing them in album sets ).

Mills was one of the first to record black and white musicians together, using twelve white musicians and the Duke Ellington Orchestra on a 12 " 78 rpm disc performing " St. Louis Blues " on one side and a medley of songs called " Gems from Blackbirds of 1928 " on the other side, himself singing with the Ellington Orchestra.
