Lieutenant General Leslie J. McNair, commander of Army Ground Forces, had similar misgivings: once an airborne supporter, he had been greatly disappointed by their performance in North Africa and more recently Sicily.

The dead included Bradley's friend and fellow West Pointer Lieutenant General Lesley McNair — the highest-ranking U. S. soldier to be killed in action in the European Theater of Operations.

On 14 February 1916 near Hooge, Belgium, when the enemy exploded a mine, Lieutenant McNair and a number of men were flung into the air and many were buried.

Lieutenant McNair then ran back for reinforcements, but the communication trench being blocked he went across the open under heavy fire and held up the reinforcements the same way.

During the early months of the war, Lieutenant General McNair received largely favorable treatment for his training programs and policies.
