An article in The Daily Universal Register ( the forerunner of The Times ) of 23 December 1786 revealed the plan for a dual colonization of Norfolk Island and Botany Bay: “ The ships for Botany Bay are not to leave all the convicts there ; some of them are to be taken to Norfolk Island, which is about eight hundred miles East of Botany Bay, and about four hundred miles short of New Zealand ”.

The Centre is also responsible for curation of the Economic Botany Collection, which contains more than 90, 000 botanical raw materials and ethnographic artefacts, some of which are on display in the Plants + People exhibit in Museum No. 1.

* January 26 – Australia Day: Eleven ships of the First Fleet from Botany Bay, led by Captain Arthur Phillip, land at Sydney Cove ( which will become Sydney ), Australia, where he determines to establish the British prison colony of New South Wales, the first permanent European settlement on the continent.

In Europe, for example, Aristotle ( 384 BCE – 322 BCE ) is said to have had a physic garden in the Lyceum at Athens, which was used for educational purposes and for the study of botany and this was inherited, or possibly set up, by his pupil Theophrastus, the " Father of Botany ".

The two new blocks of offices and classroom in the upgraded Tanglin Core area are known as the Botany Centre.

The corridors and walkways of the Botany Centre are covered by leaf imprints.

Author and First Fleet officer Watkin Tench, whose accounts are primary sources about the early years of the colony, never suggested that the epidemic may have been caused by Aborigines disturbing the grave of a French sailor who died shortly after arrival in Australia ( supposedly of smallpox ) and had been buried at Botany Bay.
