Such a cry was reported to be heard at the crowning of Brian Boru.

Three pre-16th century examples survive today ; the Brian Boru Harp in Trinity College, Dublin, and the Queen Mary and Lamont Harps, both in Scotland.

According to tradition, Brian Boru, ' High King ' of Ireland ( d. at the Battle of Clontarf, 1014 CE ) played the harp, as did many of the gentry in the country during the period of the Gaelic Lordship of Ireland ( ended c. 1607 CE with the " Flight of the Earls " following the Elizabethan Wars ).

The kings that are included range from the almost entirely mythological Labraid Loingsech, who allegedly became High King of Ireland around 431 BC, to the entirely historical Brian Boru.

Bruce's Irish ancestors included Eva of Leinster ( d. 1188 ), whose ancestors included Brian Boru of Munster and the kings of Leinster.

Irish euro coins all share the same design by Jarlath Hayes, that of the harp, a traditional symbol for Ireland since the Middle Ages, based on that of the Brian Boru harp, housed in Trinity College, Dublin.

The High King Brian Boru ( c. 941-1014 ) based his title on being emperor of the Irish people, which was in Latin: " Imperator Scottorum ", as distinct from claiming to be Emperor of the island of Ireland.
