Most of the Peninsula is occupied by San Mateo County, between San Francisco and Santa Clara counties, and including the cities and towns of Atherton, Belmont, Brisbane, Burlingame, Colma, Daly City, East Palo Alto, El Granada, Foster City, Hillsborough, La Honda, Menlo Park, Millbrae, Montara, Pacifica, Pescadero, Portola Valley, Redwood City, San Bruno, San Carlos, San Gregorio, San Mateo, South San Francisco, and Woodside.

The City-County owns several disjunct properties along the whole of the Peninsula ( mostly water pumping stations connected to the Hetch Hetchy Valley on which San Francisco has a permanent leasehold ); thus, most of the larger communities in San Mateo County are de facto suburbs of San Francisco, with the neighboring communities of Pacifica, Daly City, Broadmoor, Colma, South San Francisco, San Bruno, and Brisbane being immediate suburbs.

The area boomed in the 1980s as a leading tourist destination and in 1994, the Gold Coast City local government area was expanded to encompass the majority of the Gold Coast's metropolitan area, becoming the second most populous local government area in Australia after the City of Brisbane.

Gold Coast City is situated in the southeast corner of Queensland, to the south of Brisbane, the state capital.

It is separated from Logan City, a suburban area of Brisbane by the Albert River.

Brisbane is called " The City of Stars " because of a holiday tradition established over 65 years ago.

Brisbane was originally part of Rancho Cañada de Guadalupe la Visitación y Rodeo Viejo, a large tract of land that included the Cañada de Guadalupe ( now Guadalupe Valley ), and also the Bayshore district of Daly City, the Visitacion Valley district of San Francisco, and San Bruno Mountain.

He proposed the name change from Visitacion City to Brisbane.

Annis regarded the name Visitacion City as a handicap " being so close to a San Francisco city district with a similar name ", a situation he felt would confuse people and would prevent " Brisbane " from establishing its own unique identity.

Universal Paragon's proposed Brisbane Baylands project, if approved by Brisbane voters, proposes to more than double the existing employment base of the City by providing new office, research & development, retail, hotel and other land uses that are accessible by a proposed multi-modal transit station ( Caltrain, Muni T-Third light rail and proposed Bus Rapid Transit ).

Daly City is bordered by the cities of San Francisco, Brisbane, Pacifica, South San Francisco, and the town of Colma.

As part of the plan, services to Auckland, Brisbane, Perth and Ho Chi Minh City will be suspended effective after the last scheduled flights of October 2011.

Between 1952 and 1969 trolley-buses operated by the Brisbane City Council used the bridge.

By 2006, the Brisbane City Council reported that on a typical weekday, 42000 vehicles crossed the bridge and at peak times both ends of the bridge suffered from congestion.

Brisbane City Council Mayor, Graham Quirk conceded the Citycycle service had " not got off to a flying start ".

Hendra virus ( originally Equine morbillivirus ) was discovered in September 1994 when it caused the deaths of thirteen horses, and a trainer at a training complex in Hendra, a suburb of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia.
