He was educated at Gresham's School, Holt and King ’ s College, Cambridge, and served in World War I of 1914 – 1918 ( mentioned in despatches ), Captain ( temporary Major ), 95th ( Hants Yeomanry ) Brigade, Royal Field Artillery ( TA ).

The youngest son of William Edward Parkinson ( 1871 – 1927 ), an art master at North East County School and from 1913 principal of York School of Arts and Crafts, and his wife, Rose Emily Mary Curnow ( born 1877 ), the young Parkinson attended St. Peter's School, York, where in 1929 he won an Exhibition to study history at Emmanuel College at the University of Cambridge.

In 1791, the Town of Cambridge was transferred from Albany County to Washington County.

Washington County was slightly enlarged by the transfer of the Town of Cambridge from Albany County to Washington County in 1791.

Albany County was reduced in size in 1786 by the splitting off of Columbia County ; again in 1791 by the splitting off of Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties and the transfer of the Town of Cambridge to Washington County.

In the early 1900s, chiefly under the leadership of Harriet Taber Richardson, native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and summer resident of the nearby town of Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotian preservationists and historians began lobbying the Government of Canada to build a replica of the Habitation which stood from 1605 until its destruction in 1613.
