Carson left home in rural present-day Missouri at age 16 and became a mountain man and trapper in the West.

Born in Madison County, Kentucky, near the city of Richmond, in 1809, Carson moved at the age of one year with his parents and siblings to a rural area near Franklin, Missouri.

At age 14 Carson was apprenticed to a saddlemaker ( Workman's Saddleshop ) in the settlement of Franklin, Missouri.

Carson decided early in 1842 to return to Missouri, taking his daughter Adeline to live with relatives near Carson's former home of Franklin, to provide her with an education.
