After his defeat by Pompey in 65 BC, Mithridates VI fled with a small army from Colchis ( modern Georgia ) over the Caucausus Mountains to Crimea and attempted to raise yet another army to take on the Romans but failed to do so.

A similar Sassanian defence wall and fortification lies on the opposite side of the Caspian Sea at the port of Derbent, with an extraordinarily well preserved Sassanian fort ; that wall runs to the Caucausus mountains.

This created a 500-verst undefended border and in summer of 1777, the Khopyor regiment in addition to the remnants of the Volga Cossacks and a Vladimir Dragoon regiment were re-settled into the Northern Caucausus to build the Azov-Mozdok defence line.

The AGR last went through a major change in 1992 and in 2001 was extended into Central Asia to include the Caucausus nations.
