The Horse Cavalry Detachment of the U. S. Army's 1st Cavalry Division is made up of active duty soldiers, still functions as an active unit, trained to approximate the weapons, tools, equipment and techniques used by the United States Cavalry in the 1880s.

In June 1864, Major Joseph K. Stearns of the 1st New York Cavalry arrived under orders to burn the town down to help stop Confederate ambushes on the wagon road.

In 1792 he was commissioned as a Captain and transferred to the Kiev Cavalry Regiment that year as a second Major, transferring as a full first Major to the Sofiiskii Carabineers on 15 May 1794.

At the start of the battle, Taylor had approximately 9, 000 troops consisting of Brigadier General Alfred Mouton's Louisiana / Texas infantry division, Major General John G. The west force, under Major Green, consisted of the 21st Infantry under Major Edwin Mason ; two companies of the Oregon militia under General John E. Ross ; 1st Cavalry, Troop F, under Captain David Perry ; a company of California volunteers under Captain John O. Fairchild, and one section of two 12 pounder ( 5 kg ) mountain howitzers under 2nd Lieutenant W. H. Miller.

Major Vallejo organized the First Battalion of Native Cavalry, and he served as far east as Arizona, but did not have a battlefield role in the Civil War.

In February, the Queensland Mounted Infantry became part of Major General John French's Cavalry Division.
