The earliest mention of Hermaphroditus in Greek literature is by the philosopher Theophrastus ( 3rd century BC ), in his book The Characters, XVI The Superstitious Man, in which he portrays various types of eccentric people.

In The Characters ( c. 319 BC ), Theophrastus introduced the “ character sketch ,” which became the core of “ the Character as a genre .” It included 30 character types.

In the 1960s, Richardson appeared successfully as Sir Peter Teazle in Gielgud's production of The School for Scandal, as the Father in Six Characters in Search of an Author ( 1963 ), a return to Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream ( 1964 ) and the original production of Joe Orton's controversial farce What the Butler Saw in the West End at the Queen's Theatre in 1969 with Stanley Baxter, Coral Browne and Hayward Morse.

Combined with later editions of The Wife, and gradually adding to its bulk, were Characters ( first printed in the second of the 1614 editions ), The Remedy of Love ( 1620 ; see 1620 in poetry ), and Observations in Foreign Travels ( 1626 ).

Some of the more notable series were published, among them being Shakespeare's Characters, chiefly those subordinate ( 1863 ), and Molière's Characters ( 1865 ).

Characters in Amber DRPG are represented by four attributes: Psyche, Strength, Endurance and Warfare.

For years, Fisher would bring the characters back to his strip, billing them as " The ORIGINAL Hillbilly Characters " and advising readers not to be " fooled by imitations.
