In 1787, he came into contact with Thomas Clarkson and a group of anti-slave-trade activists, including Granville Sharp, Hannah More and Charles Middleton.

A City of London Corporation plaque commemorating the station's construction hangs on the wall of the adjoining former Great Eastern Hotel, which was designed by Charles Barry, Jr. ( son of Sir Charles Barry ) and his brother Edward Middleton Barry, and also built by Mowlem.

Granted by the Masonian Proprietors in 1749, the town was named after Sir Charles Middleton, 1st Baron Barham, who was in charge of convoy service between Barbados and the colonies.

Eldest son Charles Barry ( junior ) ( 1823 – 1900 ) designed Dulwich College and park in south London and rebuilt Burlington House ( home of the Royal Academy ) in central London's Piccadilly ; Edward Middleton Barry ( 1830 – 1880 ) completed the Parliament buildings and designed the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden ; Godfrey Walter Barry ( 1834 – 1868 ) became a surveyor ; Sir John Wolfe-Barry ( 1836 – 1918 ) was the engineer for Tower Bridge and Blackfriars Railway Bridge.

He was also an ancestor of actor Charles B. Middleton, who played Ming the Merciless in the Flash Gordon movies of the 1930s.

From 1808 he became agent to Charles John Brandling, who owned collieries on his Middleton estate near Leeds and whose family came from Felling.

The present house was completed in 1873 by his nephew, Charles Combe, to a design by Edward Middleton Barry: it has now been divided into apartments.

Colbatch brought an action against him, and Middleton wrote a longer and more temperate rejoinder ( possibly helped by Charles Ashton ).

Middleton let the matter drop after meeting Mead socially ; but two related works, an Appendix seu Definitiones, pars secunda and a letter from Middleton to another opponent, Charles La Motte, were later published in 1761 by William Heberden the elder.

Middleton contributed the homage to Led Zeppelin, " Led Boots ," and Beck chose to interpret the Charles Mingus ode to saxophonist Lester Young, " Goodbye Pork Pie Hat ," from the classic jazz album Mingus Ah Um.

Howe felt constantly undermined by Charles Middleton, the Comptroller of the Navy.

In 1775, Darwin met Elizabeth Pole, daughter of Charles Colyear, 2nd Earl of Portmore, and wife of Colonel Edward Pole ( 1718 – 1780 ); but as she was married, Darwin could only make his feelings known for her through poetry.

On the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 he again commanded the Saxons, who were included in the 2nd army under Prince Frederick Charles of Prussia, his old opponent.
