Cheng Man-ch ' ing or Zheng Manqing ( 29 July 1902-26 March 1975 ) was born in Yongjia ( present-day Wenzhou ), Zhejiang Province ( his birthday was on the 28th year of the Guangxu emperor's reign, 6th month, 25th day, which corresponds to July 29, 1902 ).
In addition to his childhood instruction, Cheng Man-ch ' ing received formal Chinese medical training.

Among Yang Chengfu's students were famous masters such as Tung Ying-chieh ( Dong Yingjie, 董英杰 ; 1898 – 1961 ), Chen Weiming, Fu Zhongwen ( Fu Chung-wen, 1903 – 1994 ), Li Yaxuan ( 李雅轩 ; 1894 – 1976 ) and Cheng Man-ch ' ing.
Cheng Man-ch ' ing, perhaps the most famous outside of China, significantly shortened and simplified the traditional forms Yang taught him after his teacher's passing, reportedly to make them more accessible to larger numbers of students.
Although Cheng's modifications are considered controversial by most other schools and are not recognized by the Yang family, Cheng Man-ch ' ing is known as the first to teach T ' ai chi ch ' uan ( Taijiquan ) in the West.
The Cheng Man-ch ' ing and Chinese Sports Commission short forms are said to be derived from Yang family forms, but neither is recognized as Yang family t ' ai chi ch ' uan by current Yang family teachers.
In 1947 he resettled in Taiwan where he became a disciple of Cheng Man-ch ' ing.
Tchoung was also a pushing hands partner of Cheng Man-ch ' ing.

In 1683, following a naval engagement with Admiral Shi Lang, Koxinga's ( Cheng Ch ' eng Kung ) grandson Zheng Keshuang and ruler of Taiwan submitted to the Qing Dynasty ( then romanised as Ch ' ing Dynasty ).
Translations of his works include: " Master Cheng's New Method of T ' ai Chi Ch ' uan Self-Cultivation "; " Cheng Man Ch ' ing: Essays on Man and Culture "; " Cheng Man Ch ' ing: Master of Five Excellences ," and " T ' ai Chi Ch ' uan: A Simplified Method of Calisthenics for Health and Self-Defense.
