Mitsuda names his favorite works as the soundtracks to the Chrono series, Xenogears, Xenosaga Episode I, and the original album Kirite, though he also says that all of his soundtracks are " representational works ", as they represent who he was as a composer when he made them.

The story centers on a man named Train Heartnet who withdrew from an elite group of assassins called the Chrono Numbers to become a bounty hunter, or Sweeper.

However, Masato Kato and others who worked on Chrono Cross — such as Yasuyuki Honne — meanwhile departed the company, mainly for Monolith Soft, and Square published no news concerning a sequel.

Takashi Tokita, who directed Chrono Trigger, mentioned a " Chrono Trigger 2 " in a 2003 interview which has not been translated to English.

A majority of Monolith Soft's staff are former employees of Square Co., who transferred to the new company shortly after the creation of Chrono Cross.

Both Rosette and Chrono are revealed during the course of the story to be driven by a shadowy past, centered on a search for Rosette's lost brother Joshua who is shown to have been taken from her by the sinner, Aion, a demon who shares a dark and bloody history with Chrono.

Despite knowing exactly who and what Chrono is, she doesn't seem the least bit afraid of him and trusts him indefinitely as her partner.

: Whenever his powers are sealed, Chrono retains the form of a young boy who appears extremely docile and rather charming, often surprising the humans he is familiar with.
