Cinematography is the discipline of making lighting and camera choices when recording photographic images for the cinema.

Cinematography can not only depict a moving subject but can use a camera, which represents the audience's viewpoint or perspective, that moves during the course of filming.

The cinematography / camera operating was done by three men who would go on to become major figures in cinematography: Joseph V. Mascelli, author of The Five Cs of Cinematography ; Vilmos Zsigmond ( listed as William Zsigmond ), who won an Academy Award for his work on Close Encounters of the Third Kind ; and László Kovács ( listed as Leslie Kovacs ).

In this context, there is also a need to consider the movement of the camera as part of the blocking process ( see Cinematography ).

The drama about a closeted gay construction worker in New York City was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival and received the Festival's Cinematography award for the camera work of Declan Quinn ( Leaving Las Vegas, Vanya on 42nd Street, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love ).

They also developed a system for image-based rendering allowing choreographed camera movements through computer graphic reconstructed sets ( also known as Virtual Cinematography ) for which Manex was awarded an Academy Award for Technical Achievement.

The film was later nominated for eleven Academy Awards, with wins for Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Film Editing, and Best Director for Spielberg, but lost the Best Picture award to Shakespeare in Love, being one of a few that have won the Best Director award without also winning Best Picture.

He was subsequently assigned a teaching position with the film school GIK ( now Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography ) where he had taught earlier and in 1933 and 1934 was in charge of writing curriculum.

He made several films with David Lean including The Sound Barrier ( 1952 ) and Hobson's Choice ( 1954 ), as well as Bridge on the River Kwai ( 1957 ), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography and the British Society of Cinematographers Award.

Cinematography uses a rotary disc shutter in movie cameras, a continuously spinning disc which conceals the image with a reflex mirror during the intermittent motion between frame exposure.

Quinn has collaborated with director Mira Nair on five projects, including Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, Monsoon Wedding, Vanity Fair, and Hysterical Blindness, which earned him a nomination for the Emmy Award for Best Cinematography for a Miniseries or Movie.

" Extremely shallow focus made its debut in cinematography in 2008 with the release of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and the start of DSLR Cinematography.

It was also nominated for Best Art Direction / Set Decoration ( Leslie Dilley, Anne Kuljian ), Best Cinematography and Best Sound ( Don J. Bassman, Kevin F. Cleary, Richard Overton and Lee Orloff ).

Frank Herbert's Dune won two Emmy Awards in 2001 for Cinematography and Visual effects in a miniseries / movie, as well as being nominated for a third Emmy for Sound editing.

Glideascope is a London based downtempo / trip-hop artist and producer, who has pioneered a direction in the genre of downtempo music which he terms ' Audio Cinematography '.

It also received EDDA nominations in four other categories: Costume Design, Cinematography and Editing, Screenplay, and TV Drama / Comedy of the Year.

Irish Film & Television Award nominations went to Ciarán Hinds, Gerard McSorley, and Brenda Fricker for their performances, Brendan Galvin for Best Cinematography, Joan Bergin for Best Costume Design, and Dee Corcoran and Ailbhe Lemass for Best Hair / Make-Up.

At the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, the creative music video for " Virtual Insanity " won four awards ; Best Video, Best Special Effects, Best Cinematography, and Breakthrough Video, and the band performed the song at the ceremony.

The video for the second single, " Black Sweat ", was nominated at the MTV VMAs for Best Cinematography.

The video for " Maps " was nominated at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and the MTV2 Award.

" At the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards, the " Papa Don't Preach " video won the Best Female Video award, and was nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Overall Performance.

The video was nominated for nine MTV Video Music Awards in 1995: Video of the Year, Best Group Video, Best Hard Rock Video, Best Alternative Video, Breakthrough Video, Best Direction, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and Viewer's Choice Award.

The music video for " This Momentary " was nominated for three UK Music Video Awards, including Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Telecine.

At the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards, the video was nominated for four nominations in the categories of Video of the Year, Best Special Effects, Best Editing, and Best Cinematography.

The video was also nominated at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards for Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Special Effects and Best Direction.

The video won the MTV Video Music Awards for Best Male Video, Best Cinematography and Best Video from a Film.

The video received nominations for Best Pop Video and Best Cinematography at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, but lost to Justin Timberlake's " Cry Me a River " and Johnny Cash's cover of " Hurt " respectively.
