In 1988, an 18-year-old African elephant, Dunda, was subject to controversial training methods which, according to San Diego City Attorney John W. According to the traditional account, the original image of Our lady of Guadalupe miracle | miraculously appeared on the cloak of Juan Diego, on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City on December 12, 1531.

Pope John Paul II beatified him on May 6, 1990, during a Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, declaring December 9 Juan Diego's feast day, one day after Immaculate Conception and invoking him as “ protector and advocate of the indigenous peoples .”
