Clarissa Harlowe " Clara " Barton ( December 25, 1821 – April 12, 1912 ) was a pioneer American teacher, patent clerk, nurse, and humanitarian.

Clara Barton was the youngest child of Stephen Barton, veteran of the Indian Wars in Ohio and Michigan and a selectman in Oxford, Massachusetts ; and his wife, Sarah.

Clara Barton became a school teacher in 1837 teaching in the area for a dozen years in schools at Oxford, N. Oxford, Charlton, and West Millbury.

When Clara Barton returned to the United States, she inaugurated a movement to gain recognition for the International Committee of the Red Cross by the United States government.

In 1975, Clara Barton National Historic Site, located at 5801 Oxford Road, Glen Echo, Maryland, was established as a unit of the National Park Service at Barton's home, where she spent the last 15 years of her life.

Large portions of the tributaries of the river were straightened and armored starting in the late 19th century and continuing through the 20th century first by farmers and then by the Santa Clara Valley Water District ( SCVWD ) and its predecessor organizations.

Ending nine years of study and passionate debate about the future of the San Jose / Alviso waterfront, the Santa Clara Valley Water District in November, 2009 voted to approve a $ 6 million project to clear bulrushes, tule reeds and thick sediment from the Guadalupe River in Alviso.

In response to this flooding, the Santa Clara Valley Water District ( SCVWD ) launched a series of flood protection projects along the Guadalupe River to ensure that residential and commercial areas near the river are protected from 100-year floods.
