North of Fulton, Wabash Township has the town of Coal Creek.

New Richmond is a town in Coal Creek Township, Montgomery County, Indiana, United States.

The town's volunteer fire department, Coal Creek Twp Fire & Rescue set off the fireworks.

Wingate, formerly known as Pleasant Hill, is a town in Coal Creek Township, Montgomery County, Indiana, United States.

Keystone opened new mines south of Rippey into the 20th century, where they were joined by the Snake Creek Coal company and the Buckeye coal company.

In 1871, W. C. Wilson of Webster City opened a coal mine in Lehigh and formed the Crooked Creek Railroad and Coal Company.

Wallins Creek began life as a coalmining town in 1925 ; the mine was owned by the Wallins Creek Coal Corporation.

The Georges Creek Coal Company had built a railroad from Piedmont to Knapp's Meadow to link the newly opened coal fields with the Eastern city markets by way of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad which had been extended from Cumberland to Piedmont in 1851.

The Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad, after purchasing the Georges Creek Coal and Iron Railroad, completed the laying of track from Cumberland to Knapp's Meadow so that the valley from Cumberland to Westernport, by way of Mt.

This mine would be bought by the George's Creek Coal Company who later leased it to Bob Loar and Charlie Eagan.

The railroads had pulled out by 1950, and the last mine, Billy Creek Coal Mine southwest of Novinger, closed in January 1966.

Originally named Walhondecepe by the Delaware Indians, The three rivers that make up the Coal River Watershed, Big, Little and Coal River were renamed in the 18th century by explorer John Peter Salling for the coal deposits found along its banks.

Since humans first arrived in the region the three rivers that make up the Coal River Watershed have served as a vital transportation link to the Kanawha River.

Coal was once a major source of employment in the county, but is now a very minor source, as the best and most available coal has been extracted.

Coal mining, both strip and underground, has been an important industry in Meigs County since the late 19th century, although mining of all types largely ceased by the 1990s.

Coal has been, and continues to be, a large natural resource found in the central portion of the county.

Coal mining has always been a major industry in Floyd County.

It still has remnants of its past with the Mineshaft Tavern and the Coal Mine Museum.

Coal mining has also affected the flow and water quality of small streams.

In 1830, the Baltimore Patriot reported that "... a greater quantity of Anthracite Coal has been sent down the Susquehanna this Spring than in any former season.

The town has a bus stop which has a billboard on one side reading " Everybody's Goal Is Mine More Coal ".

Coal mining has largely ceased in the area.

The valley is also part of the anthracite Coal Region of Pennsylvania, fire clay abounds in the vicinity, and the borough's principal industries are still the mining and shipping of coal although the demand for it has steadily declined since its peak in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, which has its roots in the Philadelphia and Reading Railway Company, the remnants of which were acquired in the late 20th century by the Reading Anthracite Company, acquired extentive coal lands and would become one of the most notable of the coal companies operating in Pennsylvania until the demise of the anthracite industry after World War II.

Twice, Coal / Railroad days has coincided with other celebrations in Appalachia.

Mining has continued until recently through the Pacific Coast Coal Company, formerly of San Francisco.

The business community has worked to bring in more visitors through annual festivals including the Manly Man Festival in June, the Pioneer Days Picnic, and a Coal Mining Festival associated with Coal Mining History Week each August.
