The chemical plant, owned by Nypro UK ( a joint venture between Dutch State Mines and the British National Coal Board ) and in operation since 1967, produced caprolactam, a precursor chemical used in the manufacture of nylon.

The Coal House, whose walls are constructed from 65 tons of bituminous coal from the nearby Winifrede Seam, serves as the headquarters of the Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The present Bedwellty House was built in 1818 as a home for Samuel Homfray, whose Iron and Coal Works were the main local employers for much of the 19th century.

At one point, Emma Bell Miles, author and painter, served as Artist-in-Residence at the university, a position that went unfilled until it was taken over by bestselling novelist Silas House ( Clay's Quilt, The Coal Tattoo ) in 2005.
