Fleet founded, among other companies, Consolidated Aircraft.

Consolidated Aircraft is well known for the PBY Catalina flying boat and the B-24 Liberator bomber.

Programming systems for the machine included the RECO regional coding assembler by Remington-Rand, the RAWOOP one-pass assembler and SNAP floating point interpretive system authored by the Ramo-Wooldridge Corporation of Los Angeles, the FLIP floating point interpretive system by Consolidated Vultee Aircraft of San Diego, and the CHIP floating point interpretive system by Wright Field in Ohio.

Bell spent several years out of the aviation industry, but in 1928 was hired by Major Ruben H. Fleet at Consolidated Aircraft, in Buffalo, New York where he was guaranteed an interest in the company.

Serendipitously, in 1935 Major Fleet decided to move Consolidated Aircraft to San Diego, and Bell stayed behind to establish his own company, the Bell Aircraft Company, on 10 July 1935, headquartered in the former Consolidated plant at 2050 Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo.

In mid-1944, the production of the B-24 was consolidated from several different companies ( including some in Texas ) to two large factories: the Consolidated Aircraft Company in San Diego and the Ford Motor Company's spawling factory in Willow Run, near Detroit, Michigan, which had been specially designed to produce B-24s.

The company was formed in 1943 by the merger of Vultee Aircraft and Consolidated Aircraft, and went on to produce a number of pioneering aircraft, such as the Convair B-36 bomber, and the F-102 Delta Dagger and F-106 Delta Dart.

The Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation, whose name was in the course of time changed to Convair, the Convair Corporation and similar names, was an American aircraft, rocket, and spacecraft company for the design, development, and manufacturing of such high-technology aerospace products, and / or sub-units of them, or else a subsidiary of a larger corporation.

It existed as a company from 1943 until 1994, although the Consolidated Aircraft company had existed before that, and had produced aircraft that were important in the early years of World War II, especially the PBY Catalina for the U. S. Navy, the Royal Canadian Air Force, the British flying forces, and some others.

What was soon to be called " Convair " ( first unofficially, and then officially ), was created in 1943 by the merger of the Consolidated Aircraft Company and the Vultee Aircraft Company.

The PBY Catalina made by Consolidated Aircraft and Canadair seems to have been the first aeroplane to have had an inflatable life boat aboard, first as optional, later as standard equipment.

Their proudest aircraft were the Consolidated Aircraft Commodore seaplanes, although they also used the Consolidated Fleetster, and the Sikorsky S-38.

In the former designation system the Navy and the Marine Corps used, a final letter of " Y " identified a Convair or a Consolidated product, such as the PBY-5 flying boat.

Not coincidentally, the Consolidated Catalina ( named for an Catalina island whose resort was partially popularized by the use of amphibians in the 1930s, including Sikorskys, and Douglas Dolphins ) was redeveloped from being a pure flying boat into an amphibian during the war.

Purpose-designed aircraft were also used, including the amphibious American Consolidated PBY Catalina, and the Japanese Kawanishi H6K and H8K flying boats.

* January 10 – 11 – A flight of six United States Navy Consolidated P2Y flying boats sets a new distance record for formation flying of between San Francisco, California, and Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii.

* September 7 – 8 – Six United States Navy Consolidated P2Y flying boats make a non-stop formation flight from Norfolk, Virginia, to the Panama Canal, covering in 25 hours 20 minutes.

Al was the Co of the 66th Squadron ( part of the 44th Bombardment Group ) flying Consolidated B-24 Liberators from England.

Others, such as the Consolidated B-24 / LB-30 Liberator, Bell P-63 Kingcobra fighter, Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero and SBD Dauntless, are one of only two or three of that type left flying today.

Flying Officer Cruickshank was twenty-four years old when he piloted a Consolidated Catalina anti-submarine flying boat from Sullom Voe on 17 July 1944 on a patrol north into the Atlantic.

* During World War II, squadrons of Consolidated PBY Catalina flying boats painted black for night attack operations against the Japanese in the South Pacific were known affectionately by their crews as " Black Cats.

A Consolidated Catalina flying boat had just reported that it was shadowing a large force of enemy carriers accompanied by battleships steering west from the Malacca Straits, directly for Ceylon.

Reformed as part of Coastal Command in Northern Ireland in 1941 at RAF Nutts Corner, the unit was equipped with the Consolidated Liberator, flying against the U-Boat threat in the war in the North Atlantic.

The naval 330 Squadron and 333 Squadron flew Northrop N-3PB patrol bombers, Consolidated PBY Catalina and Short Sunderland flying boats and de Havilland Mosquito fighter bombers.

From 1942-1945, Alamogordo AAF served as the training grounds for over 20 different groups, initially flying Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses then Consolidated B-24 Liberators.

Widerøe on their side proposed using their Consolidated PBY Catalina flying boats, but these proved to expensive.

Flight Lieutenant Hornell was flying as aircraft captain on Consolidated Canso amphibians with 162 ( Bomber Reconnaissance Squadron ), RCAF from RAF Wick in Northern Scotland, when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

During the Second World War, 202 Squadron flew anti-submarine patrols from Gibraltar with Saro London, Consolidated Catalina and Short Sunderland flying boats and some Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers until 1944, when it moved with their Catalinas to RAF Castle Archdale, Northern Ireland, disbanding there on 12 June 1945.
