Having performed alongside one another in previous acts such as IBOPA ( the Indestructible Beat of Palo Alto ) and Ten in the Swear Jar, Jamie Stewart and Cory McCulloch formed their third collaborative effort, Xiu Xiu, in 2002.

Following 2002, the group would shrink in membership as Yvonne Chen left in order to focus on her vegan boutique Otsu and self-published magazine Zum, while Cory McCulloch also stopped touring, focusing instead on producing the band's next two LPs.

James ' Jimmy ' McCulloch ( 4 June 1953 – 27 September 1979 ) was a Scottish musician and songwriter best known for playing lead guitar in Paul McCartney's Wings from 1974 to 1977.

The line-up on the Clutha's first album, Scotia ( 1971 ), was John Eaglesham ( vocal, concertina ), Erlend Voy ( fiddle, concertina, vocals ), Calum Allan ( fiddle ), Ronnie Alexander ( vocals, guitar ) and Gordeanna McCulloch ( vocals ).

In 2001, the Clutha released an album entitled On the Braes, with Ronnie Alexander ( vocals, guitar ), Erlend Voy ( fiddle, concertina, vocals ), Callum Allan ( fiddle ), Gordeanna McCulloch ( vocals ) and Tom Johnstone ( pipes ).

From 1969 until 1971, the nucleus of the band consisted of songwriter John " Speedy " Keen ( vocals, drums, guitar ); Andy " Thunderclap " Newman ( piano ); and Jimmy McCulloch ( guitar ).
