The genre of Crayon Rails board games was started by Mayfair's publication in 1982 of Empire Builder.

The Empire Builder games are sometimes called Crayon Rails games because players mark their tracks on the board with plastic crayons ( or sometimes with markers or other items ).

Crayon rails is the generic term for a board game which recreates the building of railroads via the use of crayons ( or in some cases non-permanent marker pens ) on a reusable wipe clean board.
