Jiminy Cricket is the Walt Disney version of " The Talking Cricket " (), a fictional character created by Carlo Collodi for his children's book Pinocchio, which was adapted into an animated film by Disney in 1940.

The name of the character is a play on the minced oath exclamation " Jiminy Cricket!

As a character actor he was unequalled in his day, especially in such parts as Triplet in Masks and Faces, Joey Ladle in No Thoroughfare, and John Peerybingle in his own dramatization of The Cricket on the Hearth.

Other early parts included Newman Noggs in Nicholas Nickleby, Caleb Plummer in Dot ( an adaption of The Cricket on the Hearth ), Dr. Pangloss in George Colman the Younger's The Heir at Law, Salem Scudder in The Octoroon, and Bob Acres in The Rivals, the last being not so much an interpretation of the character as Sheridan sketched it as a creation of the actors.

Nina was initially a very small, supporting role tied into the teenage pregnancy theme ( she was an acquaintance of the main character, Molly Stark, a teenage runaway befriended by Cricket Blair ( Lauralee Bell ) of the summer 1986 season.

Her character also dropped the childish epithet of " Cricket ", especially after her rival Phyllis ( Michelle Stafford ) turned it into a pun against her, calling her " the Bug.

An important character is Mr Hodge ; a caricature of Sir John Squire ( poet and editor of the London Mercury ) while the cricket team described in the book ’ s most famous chapter is a representation of Sir John ’ s Cricket Club – the Invalids-which survives today.

The original version was sung by Cliff Edwards in the character of Jiminy Cricket, and is heard over the opening credits and in the final scene of the film.

The term " first-class cricket " was formally defined by the then Imperial Cricket Conference ( ICC ) in May 1947 as a match of three or more days duration between two sides of eleven players officially adjudged first-class ; the governing body in each country to decide the status of teams.
