Cry, The Beloved Country has been filmed twice ( in 1951 and 1995 ) and was the basis for the Broadway musical Lost in the Stars ( adaptation by Maxwell Anderson, music by Kurt Weill ).

Lost in the Stars is a musical with book and lyrics by Maxwell Anderson and music by Kurt Weill, based on the novel Cry, the Beloved Country ( 1948 ) by Alan Paton.

So did the title song of Anderson and Weill's Lost in the Stars, a story of South Africa based on the Alan Paton novel Cry, The Beloved Country.

In 1972, Anderson had three Top 5 hits on the country charts, beginning with a cover version of the 50s pop hit, " Cry ", followed by " Listen to a Country Song " and " Fool Me ".

However, Shaw eventually agreed to UK satellite screenings, although according to a Radio Times interview only after being discreetly made aware that Gordon Jackson's widow, actress Rona Anderson ( who guested in Cry Wolf ), was suffering financial difficulties after her husband's death.

In addition, Dolphy's album Far Cry recorded for Prestige features Little on four tunes.

The album Far Cry contains his famous performance of the Gross-Lawrence standard " Tenderly " on alto saxophone, and his subsequent tour of Europe quickly set high standards for solo performance with his exhilarating bass clarinet renditions of Billie Holiday's " God Bless the Child " ( the earliest known version was recorded at the Five Spot during his residency with Booker Little ).

Two more singles were released from the album, " Jailbird " and "( I'm Gonna ) Cry Myself Blind ", both of which charted progressively lower.

And in 1989, Linda Ronstadt recorded the album Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind, which featured four Jimmy Webb songs: " Still Within the Sound of My Voice " ( with Webb playing piano ), " Adios " ( with orchestral arrangement by Webb ), " I Keep It Hid " ( with Webb playing piano ), and " Shattered ".

Country influences can be heard on rock records through the 1960s, including tracks on the Beatles for Sale album ( 1964 ) ( including " I'll Cry Instead ", " Baby's in Black " and " I Don't Want to Spoil the Party "), on the Rolling Stones " High and Dry " ( 1966 ), as well as Buffalo Springfield's " Go and Say Goodbye " ( 1966 ) and " Kind Woman " ( 1968 ).

When he learned of its release, Gaye accused Motown of editing and remixing the album without his consent, allowing the issue of an unfinished production (" Far Cry "), altering the album art of his request and removing the album title's question mark, muting its irony.
