The novel was influenced by the heightened atmosphere of the Cold War, with its escalating series of international crises such as the U-2 incident ; West Berlin ; unrest in Hungary, Indochina, Congo, and Latin America ; and the Cuban missile crisis.

The film's new climax involves a superpower confrontation between Soviet paratroopers and the American marines at Ice Station Zebra itself, but concludes on a much more ambiguous note than the novel, reflecting the perceived thaw in the Cold War following the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The novel Dreaming in Cuban, by Cristina García, alternates between third person limited and first person depending on the generation of the speaker ; the grandchildren recount events in first person while the parents and grandparent are shown in third person limited.

The magical realist style and thematic substance of One Hundred Years of Solitude established it as an important, representative novel of the literary Latin American Boom of the 1960s and 1970s, that was stylistically influenced by Modernism ( European and North American ), and the Cuban Vanguardia ( Vanguard ) literary movement.

In 1962 Tomas Gutierrez Alea made a Cuban version titled " Las Doce Sillas " in a tropical context starkly similar to the Soviet one of the novel.

Paradiso was the only novel by Cuban poet José Lezama Lima to be completed and published during his lifetime.

The also Cuban humorist and writer Juan Ángel Cardi wrote a novel entitled El American Way of Death, published in 1981, also satirizing the American Way of Life.

* Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier's second novel, The Kingdom of this World ( 1949 ), ( translated into English 1957 ), explores the Haitian Revolution in depth.

In recent years, Alvarez has expanded her subject matter with works such as In the Name of Salomé ( 2000 ), a novel with Cuban rather than solely Dominican characters and fictionalized versions of historical figures.

The film, directed by Humberto Solás, was based on the 19th century Cuban novel, Cecilia Valdés.

When asked about the modification of his novel in the film adaptation, Hijuelos said, " My only concern was that the Cuban culture be treated with respect and the music be authentic and accurate to the period.
