After the defeat at the Battle of Culloden, the Prince spent some time hiding from the British troops on Raasay and as a consequence of the island's support for the Jacobite cause the original Raasay House and many dwellings were burnt down by government troops.

) of Murlagan resisted Bonny Prince Charlie's attempt in 1745 for the British throne although his two sons went out in support of the prince under Cameron of Locheil, and one died at Culloden, the other rescued the prince and the last skirmish of the 1745 rebellion against the House of Hanover was on the land and policies of Murlagan, where French gold to fund the rebellion was rumoured buried, as the remnants scattered into hiding and the Prince went on his secret journey to the Isle of Skye and exile in France and into legend.

Culloden village was originally made up of estate houses attached to Culloden House.

Historic buildings include Culloden House itself, which is now a hotel, the Culloden stables, now rebuilt as holiday homes, and the historic tithe barn which is now the Barn Church.

In the 1960s an area near the historic village was drained for a council housing project, including Culloden Stores, Culloden Academy and Duncan Forbes Primary School, named after the Forbeses of Culloden, who owned Culloden House from 1626 to 1897.

Culloden House now stands as one of the luxury country house hotels in Scotland.

* Lieutenant-General Henry ' Hangman ' Hawley, the infamous butcher at the Battle of Culloden, lived at West Green House and is buried in the family vault beneath St Mary's Church.

It is called the King's House because British troops were billeted here following the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

It was originally built as a tithe barn for the estate of Culloden House, and in 1746 it was used by the Jacobite army as accommodation on the night before the Battle of Culloden.
