In 1722 he designed the Cupola Room, the principal state room, with feigned coffering in its high coved ceiling ; in 1819, the Cupola Room was the site of the christening of Princess Alexandrina Victoria, who had been born at Kensington, in the apartments of the Duke and Duchess of Kent ( the actual room being what is now the North Drawing Room ).

Charles Wheelwright, who had defined the specifications for every window on every prior US manned spacecraft, began to define the design specs of the Cupola windows.

Laurie Weaver, who had just started with NASA as a co-op, began to work on a series of different configurations for the Cupola.

The McDonnell-Douglas design was basically the same as NASA ’ s but Boeing ’ s was smaller ; a hexagon, with a single large circular overhead window, and a much shorter cylinder ; this design had been considered but previously discarded because it was unable to accommodate two crew members completely and would instead require the crew to dangle their legs and bodies in the Node to which the Cupola would be attached.

The MSS has two RWS units: one located in the Destiny module ( US Lab module ) and the other in the Cupola.

The installation of the Cupola, along with Tranquility, marks one of the last main components to be added to the International Space Station.

As Intravehicular Officer, he choreographed the three EVAs involved with the installation and activation of the Node 3 module and Cupola.

The Cupola that evolved was octagonal in shape, with eight similar windows around the periphery, four quadrant windows overhead, and mounted on a cylinder.

The Cupola made the rounds to Brazil and then finally wound up with ESA and the Italians in 1998, who did complete it back in 2003.

The delivery method also changed from Cupola being mounted on a Spacelab pallet accompanying Kibos external facility to being mounted on the same European pallet but with Node 3 to being mounted on Node 3 itself.

Also, much-needed renovations and modernizations were made on Fuller and Memorial, the most dramatic being that of Fuller, where details such as its 4th floor, front veranda, dining hall, and ornate Victorian embellishments were replaced with simpler windows, a third floor, Cupola, offices for administration, and other architectural shifts characteristic of post-war modernism.

Tranquility was launched with the Cupola attached to mating adapter earthward facing port.

After mating Tranquility with the port Common Berthing Mechanism of Unity, the Cupola was transferred to the nadir facing port of Tranquility where it will stay.

Tranquility will primarily be used for exercise, storage, and robotics work in connection with Cupola.

Because of confusion between the responsibilities of the two contracts, both Boeing, which won Work Package 1, and McDonnell-Douglas, which won Work Package 2, bid to build the Cupola.
