Merfyn married Nest ferch Cadell, the sister of Cyngen ap Cadell, the King of Powys, and founded what was to become known as the House of Aberffraw which was named after his principal court at Aberffraw on the Isle of Môn ( Anglesey ).

The family, having lost their land in the North of England, were given land by the king of Powys, Cyngen ap Cadell.

The first to rule a considerable part of Wales was Rhodri Mawr ( Rhodri The Great ), originally king of Gwynedd during the 9th century, who was able to extend his rule to Powys and Ceredigion.
