Daisy Lee Gatson Bates ( November 11, 1914 – November 4, 1999 ) was an American civil rights activist, publisher, and writer who played a leading role in the Little Rock Integration Crisis of 1957.

In 1960, Daisy Bates moved to New York City and wrote her memoir, The Long Shadow of Little Rock, which won a 1988 National Book Award.

Little Rock paid perhaps the ultimate tribute, not only to Bates but to the new era she helped initiate, by opening the Daisy Bates Elementary School and by making the third Monday in February " George Washington's Birthday and Daisy Gatson Bates Day " an official state holiday.

In 1958, Carlotta and the rest of the Little Rock Nine were awarded the Spingarn Medal by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People ( NAACP ), as was Daisy Bates.

While in Great Britain, Daisy organized a troop in Scotland and two in London before she decided that she would bring the Girl Guides movement to the United States on her next visit home to Savannah.

On March 12, 1912, Daisy gathered 18 girls to register the first troup of American Girl Guides.

Her mother wrote her that an anonymous donor was converting a carriage house ( behind the house that Daisy was renting to the Nash family ) to " club rooms " for the Girl Guides.

Daisy converted the carriage house into her Girl Scout " club rooms " for the girls shortly by May or June 1912 and willed it to the local Savannah Girl Scouts upon her death in 1927.

In 1946 Capp persuaded six of the most popular radio personalities ( Frank Sinatra, Kate Smith, Danny Kaye, Bob Hope, Fred Waring and Smilin ' Jack Smith ) to broadcast a song he'd written for Daisy Mae: ( Li ' l Abner ) Don't Marry That Girl !!
