The Deseret alphabet ( Deseret: < big > </ big > or < big > </ big >) is a phonemic English spelling reform developed in the mid-19th century by the board of regents of the University of Deseret ( later the University of Utah ) under the direction of Brigham Young, second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Deseret alphabet was developed primarily by a committee made up of the university's board of regents and church leaders Parley P. Pratt and Heber C. Kimball.

Some, such as the Shavian alphabet, Quikscript, Alphabet 26, and the Deseret alphabet, were devised as English spelling reforms.

Some neographies have been encoded in Unicode, in particular the Shavian alphabet and the Deseret alphabet.

Sometime in the mid 1850s, working with George D. Watt, he helped develop the Deseret alphabet.

As the twentieth century ended, the Deseret News found itself embroiled in a contentious and often public battle with The Salt Lake Tribune, centered around the terms of their joint operating agreement, the desire of the Deseret News to switch from afternoon to morning publication, and ownership changes at the Tribune.

Another ecclesiocracy was the administration of the short-lived State of Deseret, an independent entity briefly organized in the American West by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
