There are currently two Sexual Desire Disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV-TR ( DSM-IV-TR ) which affect men and women alike.

The diagnosis of Inhibited Sexual Desire ( ISD ) was added to the DSM when the 3rd edition was published in 1980.

In the revision of the DSM-III, published in 1987 ( DSM-III-R ), ISD was subdivided into two categories: Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder and Sexual Aversion Disorder ( SAD ).

Flibanserin, a 5-HT1A receptor agonist and 5-HT2A receptor antagonist, has been investigated by Boehringer Ingelheim as a novel, non-hormonal treatment for pre-menopausal women with Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder ( HSDD ).
