The older, Urania, is the daughter of Uranus, and inspires homosexual male ( and more specifically, ephebic ) love / eros ; the younger is named Pandemos, the daughter of Zeus and Dione, and all love for women comes from her.

The goddess Dione ( in her name simply the " Goddess ") is sometimes taken by later mythographers as a mere feminine form of Zeus ( see entry Dodona ): if this were so, she would not have assembled here.

The genus name, Dionaea (" daughter of Dione "), refers to the Greek goddess Aphrodite, while the species name, muscipula is Latin for " mousetrap ".

These terms are in reference to a section of Plato's Symposium in which two kinds of love are discussed, symbolised by an Aphrodite who is born from a male ( Uranos ), and an Aphrodite who is born from a female ( Dione ).

When Heracles took the cattle of Geryon, he shot Hera in the right breast with a triple-barbed arrow: the wound was incurable and left her in constant pain, as Dione tells Aphrodite in the Iliad, Book V. Afterwards, Hera sent a gadfly to bite the cattle, irritate them and scatter them.

Rhea's features resemble those of Dione, with dissimilar leading and trailing hemispheres, suggesting similar composition and histories.

Another account has Aphrodite as the daughter of Zeus and Dione, and this Aphrodite is associated with a common love which " is apt to be of women as well as of youths, and is of the body rather than of the soul ".
