* July 19 – A U. S. Air Force Northrop F-89J Scorpion launches a live AIR-2 Genie (" Ding Dong ") unguided nuclear air-to-air missile.

On 16 September, five Viet Minh infantry and one heavy weapons battalions attacked Dong Khe.

The commander of the Cao Bang fort, Colonel Charton, was ordered to destroy his heavy equipment and motor transport and evacuate towards Dong Khé.

In 195, after the death of the warlord Dong Zhuo, Xu Huang followed Yang Feng to escort Emperor Xian from Chang ' an back to Luoyang, which by then was much dilapidated.

Together they escorted Emperor Xian back to Luoyang after the death of Dong Zhuo, who had been holding the emperor hostage.

Traditional historians characterized the relationship between Emperor Ai and Dong Xian as one between homosexual lovers and referred to their relationship as " the passion of the cut sleeve " ( 斷袖之癖 ) after a story that one afternoon after falling asleep for a nap on the same bed, Emperor Ai cut off his sleeve rather than disturb the sleeping Dong Xian when he had to get out of bed.

It warned that Dong might suffer the same fate of Emperor Wen's favorite Deng Tong ( 鄧通 ), who starved to death after his assets were confiscated by Emperor Wen's heir, or of Emperor Wu's favorite Han Yan ( 韓嫣 ), who was executed by Empress Dowager Wang after being accused of improperly assuming imperial style.

In early 190, after a coalition of provincial officials and exiles, led by Yuan Shao, rebelled against his authority, Dong became weary of keeping the Prince Bian alive.

Less than a month after the rebellion started, Dong ordered his subordinate Li Ru to force the prince to drink poisoned wine, although Li did permit the prince to say farewell to his wife Consort Tang and his concubines before doing so.

He was placed on the throne in 189 after Dong Zhuo removed his brother from the throne.

However, after Dong Zhuo was assassinated in 192, Emperor Xian became first a puppet and then was stranded in Luoyang with the warlords formally acknowledging him but giving him no aid.

He saw the strategical advantage in having the emperor under his control and protection, and in 196 he marched west to Luoyang and, after securing an agreement with Emperor Xian's generals Dong Cheng and Yang Feng, convincing them of his loyalty, he entered Luoyang and technically shared power with Dong and Yang, but was in fact in command.
